Day 2 is over.
Started with a presentation from the ABC (national broadcaster) on the critical role of broadcasting on an emergency.
Interesting survey (show of hands) by presenter – only 2% of room full of BC people have an emergency plan, that they have practised, at home.
Interesting to hear how the ABC used Twitter during Victorian Bushfires. We all need to understand how we can leverage Social Media to improve resilience.
Presenter from Bureau of Meterology with interesting data showing year on year increase in temperature. Another reason to ensure we are prepared for severe weather events.
Extra stress as my session is delayed. The presentation is embedded in this post.
Michael Lee reported on his PhD research on indicators for resilience. Comparing the response of WalMart and FEMA to Hurricane Katrina. He is also developing an interesting typology of resilience.
Session by Victoria Ambulance gave a first hand case study of 2009 heatwave and bushfire events. Key messages that their plans quickly overtaken by events. Agility and Adaptability were certainly called for.
One particular learning from this session was that management resources ran out first and take longer to refresh. Important to factor this into our corporate Crisis and Incident Management Plans. Primary and alternate is not enough – consider how you would cope with sustained 24 hour a day operation.
I was invited to join panel for last session to discuss future of profession. Effectively the issue was resilience – is it a distraction, a subset or the discipline that will absorb BCM?
No clear answers, not sure that the BCI has a fully coherent position on the question. I can say that because my dues are fully paid and I have read the 2010 GPG.
All said, was a good conference. Well done BCI and Continuity Forum.
Looking forward to Org Resilience Workshop tomorrow.
