September was promoted by the BCI as Education Month. There have been various webinars hosted, a competition to encourage people to update their CPD records and a bunch of discounts offered on BCI training courses.
As the month winds down I am wondering if there was much focus on education and learning – or just more vocational training?
My contribution was published by Continuity Insights at the start of the month – The Importance of the Cyber Supply Chain in Business Continuity. The paper asked people to use the month to widen their education, to take the opportunity to study and think outside the discipline. It uses Supply Chain analysis to describe the delivery of Information Services and raises cyber threats in business terms.
The intent was not to suggest that this is the best way to represent these subject, there is never a one best way. The intent was to suggest that we need to be capable of presenting our message in different fashions – and more often in the language and jargon of the audience rather than ourselves.
This was also the month when the BCI changed its vision statement – no longer the art and science of BC, going forward the vision is “To be the Professional Body of choice for resilience professionals”.
What are your thoughts on that change?
The Gaping Void cartoon at the top of the post says it all – change is not optional. We need to embrace learning and education if we are to understand what we must be. Resilience is a broader concept than BC and it demands that we widen our skill set.
That is the challenge of education, and more importantly, learning. It will take more than a month and it has to be ongoing.
Did you widen your education this month?
Or just more of the same vocational training?
