… many happy returns

No sooner had my blog been recovered from the previous failure, than I seem to have been infected with some kind of malware probably injected via a comment into my database.

I shall have to practice safe blogging in future!

Still it could be worse. Consider this incident.

At the recent AusCERT Conference the delegates were all given a USB device as a take away. The devices were provided by one of the sponsors, IBM.

Imagine the red faces at Big Blue when it was discovered that they had sent all these IT Security folks home with a USB device infected with malware.

I was not at that conference, so that particular infection is probably not what crashed by blog. But it is really not surprising to see that basic controls still seem to fail – or perhaps simply be sidestepped – in all kinds of situations.

As I write this I am in transit to Toronto for the World Conference on Disaster Management, where I will be speaking. I shall be very careful with any storage devices they are giving away.

Perhaps the price of resilience is eternal vigilance.
